How to Ger Rid of Acne Scars Naturally
If you’ve developed an effective skin care routine that’s appropriate for your skin type, if you expect to maintain those great results, you need to follow that routine faithfully.
The hard work will pay off with your complexion becoming clearer each and every day, but more importantly, staying clear over time. Unfortunately, the cleansers, toners and moisturizers will have very little effect on any potential acne (pimple/ blemish) scars remaining from prior breakouts.
Dermalinfusion, dermabrasion, chemical peels and laser skin treatments are a few of the more effective high-tech methods used to remove acne (pimple/ blemish) scars. While they can provide excellent results, these treatment options might need to be repeated for certain people in order to deliver the desired outcome, which could be costly in the long run.
The good news is there are several options available for treating acne (pimple/ blemish) scars that you can make yourself using natural ingredients. With a variety of natural ingredients to get rid of acne (pimple/ blemish) scars, you’re certain to find one or more that work for you.
How Are Acne Scars Formed?
When a pore is swollen with oil, bacteria and dead skin cells, it causes a rupture in the pore’s wall. Minor breakouts with shallow lesions usually heal quickly. If the rupture occurs deeper within the skin, debris can spill out into surrounding tissue. New collagen is formed to repair these lesions, but the texture is not equal to the smoothness of the original skin.
Acne (pimple/ blemish) scars fall into one of two categories:
- Hypertrophic scars are created by the build-up of collagen, which forms a small raised surface.
- Atrophic scars, on the other hand, are small depressions similar to chicken pox scars that result from a loss of tissue.
DIY Natural Acne Scar Treatments
The best thing about the following natural ingredients is the fact that many of them are items you already have on hand. If not, they ‘re easy to get at your local grocery store or health and natural foods store.
1. Lemon Juice
Lemons are one of nature’s all-purpose health and beauty aids. The acidity of the juice makes it a great skin tonic.
- Squeeze the juice of an organic lemon into a bowl and use a cotton ball to dab it on the scars. Dilute the juice with water if you have sensitive skin.
- When it dries, rinse the cool water and apply moisturizer.
- Your skin will be more sensitive to UV radiation, so stay out of direct sunlight immediately after application.
2. Vitamin E
The healing properties of vitamin E are well known. Just puncture the end of a capsule and either apply it directly to the scars, or you can mix it in with your moisturizer for application.
3. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is rich in vitamins A, C, E and B12 and has excellent moisturizing properties.
You can easily find aloe in gel form at your local drug store or health food store, but fresh aloe offers the most benefits. Potted aloes make great houseplants, and all you have to do is break off part of a leaf, peel back the outer coat and apply the gel directly to your skin.
4. Baking Soda
Baking soda serves as a mild exfoliant that is gentler on your skin than commercial products.
- Make a paste with water and a few teaspoons of baking soda.
- Massage the mixture into the scars and leave on for several minutes.
- Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Apply moisturizer.
5. Fenugreek
You may not be familiar with fenugreek, which is an herb native to the Mediterranean countries. The leaves and seeds are generally used in culinary applications, but fenugreek has long been used in these cultures as a health aid.
- Boil a tablesppon of fenugreek seeds in one cup of water and grind into a paste.
- Once the mixture has cooled, apply the paste to acne (pimple/ blemish) scars. After it dries, rinse with warm water.
6. Honey
Honey has natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Its soothing, gentle texture makes it a good option for sensitive skin. Use a cotton swab to dab honey directly on the scarred areas.
7. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar helps to restore the pH balance of your skin to a healthy level. Mix one-part apple cider vinegar with an equal part of water and dab onto acne (pimple/ blemish) scars with a cotton ball.
8. Ice Cubes
Just as ice cubes reduce redness and swelling from injuries, they can do the same for acne (pimple/ blemish) scars. For extra-strength healing, make the ice cubes with some strong green tea, which adds anti-inflammatory properties.
9. Olive Oil
While applying oil to your face may sound contradictory, olive oil is bursting with healthy properties that are beneficial to skin, including vitamin E, polyphenols, and phytosterols.
- Before going to bed, massage some olive oil into the scars until it’s fully absorbed.
- Dampen a clean washcloth with warm water and place it on your face for a steaming effect.
- Use the washcloth to blot any excess oil, and wash your face normally after one to two minutes.
Any of these methods can be reapplied as needed in getting rid of acne (pimple/ blemish) scars. Consult your dermatologist with any other questions you may have about acne (pimple/ blemish) scars.
